Knowing that Google has 90% of the search engine market, it is really important that a small business shows up in Google searches. Up until recently your physical address had to show up in searches, for many virtual business owners that just isn't an option. That has all changed now. My advice, if this is news to you, is to create a Google My Business Account right now. If you want to search Fairley Good Designs and you can see what my Google My Business listing looks like. It’s really easy and FREE. You need a gmail account. I suggest using an existing gmail account that you use regularly. Don't worry you don’t have to use this email address in the listing. Other information you will need is your actual address, contact information, some pictures, a logo if you have one & a blurb about your business. A service area will be posted online so figure that out too. You don’t need a website. If you’re having one created, set up your Google My Business first and then add the website when it’s up and running. A verification document could be sent to your home in about 10 days. When/if you receive that, enter the code. There’s a whole bunch of options to spend money on advertising… I just did the bare minimum and will add to it later if need be. Your listing should show up in a few days! Recently I've had clients where the profile went LIVE without any notification. Congratulations you are now the proud owner of a Google My Business listing. If this doesn’t sound really easy, give me a shout and I’ll walk you through it.

Anyone who tells you that there are hacks to building a following is selling you a bill of goods. All you need to do is offer content that educates, interests or offers solutions to your followers and post consistently. That's it! Sounds easy enough but it can take a lot of time & energy. Whether you’re a regular user of social media or new to the game here are some tips and tricks that will help you build a true following. 1. Figure out who you want to attract. Is it other businesses? customers? Then follow pages that will provide you with meaningful content for those people. Local businesses. Compatible businesses/suppliers. Charities or causes you believe in and want to support. BIAs or Resident Associations. Publications/News outlets/blogs… Passions, hobbies or special interests… Now start to follow them on all your different channels. Like, comment, and share their content. 2. You don't have to be online all the time. Once or twice a week go online and go through your newsfeed and engage with the people you are following. Like, comment & share their content. 3. Create your own content. It can be as simple as posting your store hours, an updated menu, or new procedures to start and then add inspiring quotes, testimonials, blog posts… Schedule it so that it is distributed over time rather than all at once. 4. Once you have a bit of content, invite people to join your page and keep posting. 5. Remember the 80/20 rule. 80% of your content should be useful to your followers (educate, interest, or offer solutions) and only 20% should specifically promote your business. That’s a lot of OTHER content! 6. Post consistently. It's better to post once/week consistently then to post five days in a row and then not for a few weeks. If you've got questions about any of this, give me a shout. |
